In Brief
March like your life depends upon it

ELIZABETH GEORGE

This is going to be extremely brief. On March 28—next Saturday—we will have the opportunity to gather in community, a rare occurrence in this day and age, at least in my life. This constitutes an important moment for all of us who would like to see the end of what’s been happening in the United States under the reign of Donald Trump. Consider just one small incident that I read about, a wrinkle in the fabric of the past few days:

The FCC approved the $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna by Nexstar. This created the largest local television operator in the United States. To do this, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr (appointed by Trump) waived a rule that has been in place for more than 20 years. This rule prevented any single company owning television stations from reaching more than 39% of U.S. households. By allowing Nexstar to purchase Tegna, Brendan Carr gave Nexstar permission to own 80% of the nation’s television stations. In reaction, Nexstar’s CEO thanked Trump and Carr by name.

Control of the media is essential to leaders who espouse fascism. Control of the media determines what citizens see, hear, and learn about their government. We have witnessed the control of corporate television networks be subsumed by those who wish to bend the knee to Donald Trump. We have witnessed television journalists lose their jobs as a result of falling into Trump’s disfavor. Control of the media leads to one destination only, and those of us who value the Constitution, the Amendments to the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights need to consider what—as individuals—we are going to do to safeguard all of them.

Marching in the millions sends a message. It especially sends a message to everyone running for election in November. While it’s absolutely true that a march is not going to divert Donald Trump from the course upon which he has embarked in the destruction of the country, it does illustrate to the Senate and the House of Representatives how numbered their days are should they continue their mindless support of a malicious individual who has somehow seduced millions of people into believing that he has their interests at heart.

It will take a few hours away from your Saturday to join the people in your city or your town and walk in solidarity with them. My husband and I will be joining those gathering at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle and marching with them from there.

Please find your local gathering site. Take a sign. Make a sign. Buy a sign. Or just show up for the good of all of us, every age, every inclination, and every color.
