HISTORY
The
Elizabeth George Foundation was created in 2000 with the sole
purpose of making artistic grants to unpublished fiction writers,
emerging playwrights and organizations benefiting disadvantaged
youth.
Elizabeth George, who created the foundation, knew
first-hand the struggles of being a young, unpublished writer,
looking for a way to give her craft the time it deserved. After her
success as a novelist, Elizabeth was determined to give back to the
writers' world by supporting up-and-coming fiction writers with
monetary honors, so that they, too, could have an opportunity to
make their way to success.
She also wanted to help children and youth who might
not have had opportunities to discover their talents at writing,
acting and music. And she needed a way to just reach out a helping
hand to disadvantaged youth whose dreams may have been sidelined
because of bad health or lack of social skills.
Thus, the creation of her foundation.
The Foundation is governed by a
Board of Trustees that meets annually to review the applications
for grants and to make awards. Currently, five trustees serve on the
board and represent a wide range of professional backgrounds.
